Our History

A Legacy of Faith. A Future of Community.

Temple Shalom’s story is one of perseverance, passion, and purpose. What began in the early 1960s as gatherings in the home of Allen and Judy Levin in Port Charlotte grew into a shared vision among a small group of dedicated Jewish families—to create a lasting spiritual home in Southwest Florida where Jewish life could flourish. Founded on community, shaped by faith, and built with love, Temple Shalom has become a beacon for Reform Judaism in Charlotte County and beyond.

From Humble Beginnings

Without a permanent building, early services were held in members’ homes, community centers, and rented spaces. Despite the challenges, the desire to build a synagogue—a true center for worship, learning, and connection—never wavered. Through grassroots fundraising, shared determination, and boundless faith, Temple Shalom was established as a recognized congregation.

Building Our Home

As our membership grew, so did our impact. A building was acquired, and with it came the ability to host regular Shabbat services, educational programs, holiday observances, and community events. Our sanctuary, classrooms, Judaic library, and gathering spaces became more than physical structures—they became the heart of our Jewish life in Charlotte County.

Growing Together

Over the decades, Temple Shalom has been guided by compassionate leaders, spirited laypeople, and dedicated clergy. We’ve celebrated milestones, supported each other through life’s transitions, and evolved with the changing needs of our congregation. Whether welcoming new families or honoring our founding members, our community has remained deeply committed to Reform Jewish values.

Today and Tomorrow

Temple Shalom is more than a synagogue—it’s a spiritual family. With a strong foundation and forward-thinking vision, we continue to grow through worship, education, service, and celebration. We welcome all who wish to explore Jewish life in a warm, inclusive environment.

Our past has shaped who we are. Our future is built on the same principles that started it all—faith, community, and a shared purpose.

Health & Safety

At Temple Shalom, the health, safety, and well-being of our members, guests, and staff are a top priority. We believe that creating a sacred space also means creating a safe space—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Safety Measures & Emergency Preparedness

We have implemented a number of proactive steps to ensure a secure and comfortable environment for all:

Security Cameras & Monitoring: Our building is equipped with a modern surveillance system and secure entry protocols.

Fortified Entryways: Thanks to generous support from the Harry Kramer Memorial Fund, we have upgraded doors and reinforced key areas to enhance physical security.

Emergency Response Protocols: Our leadership team has developed emergency plans in coordination with local authorities to prepare for severe weather, medical emergencies, and other potential threats.

Health Awareness & Cleanliness

In response to evolving public health concerns, Temple Shalom has adopted best practices in hygiene and sanitation:

Routine Cleaning: High-touch surfaces and shared spaces are regularly cleaned and disinfected.

Hand Sanitizing Stations: Available throughout the building to encourage hand hygiene.

Ventilation & Air Quality: Our facility maintains proper ventilation to ensure healthy indoor air.

Community Responsibility

We trust our community to care for one another. If you are feeling unwell, we ask that you stay home and take advantage of any virtual programming offered. Our clergy and lay leadership are available for pastoral care and outreach, even from a distance.

Your safety is our shared responsibility—and part of how we uphold the Jewish values of pikuach nefesh (preserving life) and kavod habriyot (human dignity). We are committed to remaining vigilant, compassionate, and ready to adapt as needed.
